From the book gifted to me on self-care for women...
Care of the Ears
We, people who can hear, are unaware of the lonely world of silence, hence we completely ignore our ears. Care of ears is as important as that of any other organ in our body.People have strange habits of scratching their ears and cleaning them by using all sorts of objects such as pins, matchsticks or even toothpicks, which can result in ear infection.
Piercing the ear-lobe is a common custom amonsgst Indian women. Piercing of the stiff part of the ear, the auricle, has become a fad today but it can prove dangerous and lead to severe deformity in case of infection.A person who regularly takes aspirin and certain antibiotics may suffer from a temprory loss of hearing. Therefore, medicines should be taken judiciously, that is, only when needed.
Exposure to loud sounds can be detrimental to the ears. Noise pollution is on the rise with ever increasing vehicles on the road. In the Stone age, the roar of a lion or a thunder were probably the loudest sounds one heard. Today, we have high pitched sounds as that of the jet engines and machines rattling our senses. It is these what are harmful to the ears. When loud low-pitched sounds strike the eardrum, the muscles tighten, but more than that, ears cannot handle. Loud noise can progressively wreck the hearing process. Abuse of the Walkman stereo can cause perceptible loss of hearing.
Smoking too can affect the hearing process. Nicotine or even caffeinewhich is present in coffee and tea constrict the arteries in the inner ear, reducing the nourishment to the inner ear. It is true that when we catch a cold we have a rough time managing ourselves as a watery discharge keeps flooding the nose; the eyes too keep watering. This is the time to be careful so as not to blow the nose too hard or else the infection may travel to the ears also. Keep in mindthat ears and the nose are connected to each other like two best friends. When suffering from cold, both the ears too get blocked along with the nose.
........Remember that wax in the ear is anatural secretion of the ceruminous and sebaceous glands. Normally, the flakes fall off by themselves. But wax may accumulate due to various reasons. To soften it or help it blow out, we can use oil-based drops or oil that is sterilised by boiling and then cooling to body temperature. Should the wax still remain in an impacted condition as a lump, then an ear specialist can remove it. Care of ears will help preserve the sense of hearing for a long time.
