Goodevening!
from a book called," Christianity in India: ITS TRUE FACE"
I quote," Father Guido Colussi, was an Italian like Father Cerato. He was born in 1912-the year in which I too was born-has been in India since 1928. He says,' I know more about Indian affairs than I do about affairs in Italy.' Having made a choice long ago, to think that he might have made a wrong choice and labourer under it all these years-it was rather absurd to think that the choice so made had been wrong....
4he took me to a neighbouring parish where he made enquiries as to how ' the new University's coming on, meaning the elementary school building that was being put up. In the local bazaar I saw him bargaining about the price of some Dal like any native, threatening to cease to be the Marwari's customer if he would not reduce the price.Coming out of the shop he told me the Marwaris make a lot of money but they have not profited in any way; their women are uneducated, their sons only half-educated; they themselves don't live well but they want t9 kerp on earning more money.
5i visited the convent and school which were managed by an Italian, Sister Severina. The convent and school were very well built. they were designed by an engineer but built under the supervision of Father Colussi. Assamese, Bihari, Bengali, Kerala, and Tamil sisters ran the school; the Malayalu Sister showed me the jack fruit and tapioca plants they were cultivating in the large garden attached to the convent.
6te first girl from the school graduated in 1968.The labourers working in the tea plantations, and their sons would not have been educated but for the Christians of Assam, said Father Colussi. they trusted these Fathers and 9ften when they went back home to Chota-Nagpur-for many of these labourers in the tea-gardens came from that area- they gave their life's savings to these Fathers to be sent to Ranchi; if they kept it on their person they were cheated out of it by some local budmash dressed up as a policeman or a railway ticket inspector. 'Often we are called upon to send for somebody to Shillomg to accompany them till Barauni,- till they are out of the danger z9ne,' said Father Colussi.
7to my surprise, I came across this book t9day from an old book shelf in our home, and it has a label which certified me for my general proficiency in std 12 for excellence in Catechism.
8hve a goodevening!
